Still Working on the Goal

It's been awhile since posting. Since the last post I've bricked my front yard by the outside fence, first phase and started near the house. I'll post a picture when it's all done. What does this have to do with weight loss? It's exercise!

Speaking of exercise...
Here are some Housework Activities that burn calories, with 4 points being the highest burn and 1.5 points being the lower.
Hand sewing 1.5; Sweeping the floor 2; Machine sewing 2; Polishing furniture 2; Peeling potatoes 2.5; Scrubbing while standing 2.5; Hand washing clothes 2.5; Kneading dough 2.5; Scrubbing floors 3; Cleaning windows 3; Making beds 3; Ironing while standing 3.5; Mopping 3.5; Wringing wash by hand 3.5; Hanging wash 3.5; Beating carpets 4.

...So sound like what Europians would do, or pre-WWII activities. But, I'll tell you, you can really work up a sweat doing yard work, which rates a 3.0 - 8.0 on the calorie burn scale, AND, when I want some "real" exercise, I walk, which rates a 4.5 calorie burn (going 3 mph).

I walked 2 1/4 miles today in the cooler part of the morning. I plan to get up to 3 miles a day by the end of the week.

The goal? Well I'm still down 11 pounds and off the diabetes meds. I realize I need to kick it up a notch to get the pounds off more than 2 a month...but it's better than gaining any old day.

Blood Test

It's been since April 4th since I did a blood test, so, I decided to check on my progress. As most of you know, 80 - 120 is in the very good range. Below 70 is something to be concerned about...like, get some food into your system! And, consistently above 140 is too high.

For type II diabetes, when the blood test shows a higher number, solving the problem, without prescriptions and shots, might be as easy as taking a walk afterwards. But for positive long-term results, eating right as well as exercise is the best way to solve the problem. Lay low, or eat no sugar, starches (rice & potatoes), carbonated drinks, fruit drinks and white breads. Eat LOTS of fiber foods, veggies - salads, lean proteins & beans, and some small portions of fruit.

Okay, what was my blood, no pills, no shots - After lunch - 92 YEAH!

My last Day at the Whitaker Clinic

My last day at the Whitaker Wellness Institute Medical Clinic was Saturday morning. We weighed in and then headed downstairs for breakfast.

Here are my final results.

I lost a total of 7 pounds. Not that great, but here is the really incredible news...
  • I am no longer on insulin (I was taking about 35 units a day)
  • No longer on Metformin (I was taking 1500 mgs a day)
  • I'm also off the high blood pressure meds (Atininol -sp)
  • Off the synthroid for thyroid and on Armour, a natural alternative
  • On a natural estrogin cream compounded especially to my needs

My last diabetes check was 117 (pretty astounding when it was 399 a couple of months ago). My last blood pressure check was 120 over 76 - pretty doggone good!

Also, I no longer feel that walking is like dragging a dead body around. I feel energized walking. When I get home I'm going to start walking at the park again. I used to love walking about 5 days a week, but then I got diabetes and started feeling drained...too tired to walk...then too out of shape to walk. It was like a penny in a funnel and I was the penny.

The wellness prescription of natural vitamins and herbs has helped me sleep too. I used to sleep with a cluttered mind, unable to keep the days thoughts out. I used to hate going to sleep because I would lay awake for hours with my mind still running full steam. My personal doctor recommended a natural calming power (tastes a bit like alka-selzer) and it works great.

The doctor also got me on a natural estrogine prescription cream, which was determined by blood tests.

When I consulted with the doctor, I told her that many times I heat up like I've been walking on fire all day and at night I don't have hot flashes, it's more like someone put a hot pad on me - I didn't sweat, I energized from the inside out. ...That with my sleep problems made it feel like I was living 4 days in 1 day - just burning out. The natural calming power, mentioned above, helped my mind calm down but since using the cream I've noticed the heat has begun to subside. I'm still feeling some heat, but I figure a few more weeks on the estrogine cream and that might go away too. ...I remember the day, long ago, when I'd put my feet on Bill to warm up. Of course he used to hover above the bed for a few seconds and say, "Whew!" I don't dare put my feet on him now as he would come away with 3rd degree burns. ...He might beat away the flames and get me instead. Ha ha

Carbohydrates

The simple rule about what type of carbohydrates to eat is to ask this one question - Is it dead or is it alive? Is it refined, bleached, overprocessed or just plain overcooked?

Carbohydrates are our chief source of energy and fuel for the brain. We need to eat nutrient dense carbohydrates rich in fiber - about 150 - 200 grams a day.

Complex Carbohydrates provide:
  • Vitamins & minerals
  • Phytonutrients
  • Fiber
  • Nateral sugars
What are Carbohydrate Sources?
The good stuff - Complex:
  • Vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Beans
  • Fruits

The bad stuff - Simple (refined):

  • processed sugars
  • processed grains
  • junk foods
  • most snack foods

Food: Our medicine or Our poison

A few interesting bits of information:

  • Thyme is said to cure anthrax
  • All disease is based in inflammation
  • Everything in our body is made from proteins
  • Alzhimers (sp) is nicknamed, "Diabetes type III"
  • Berries are good for the brain, thus, are called "brain berries"

Starchy foods create insulin and stores fat - diabetics should avoid potatoes and starchy foods. Starchy foods contribute to weight gain by:

  1. Quickly turning to glucose in the bloodstream
  2. Causing excess insulin production
  3. Decreasing glucagon production
  4. Leading to the conversion of sugars to stored fat

There are six basic flavors

  1. Bitter
  2. Sweet
  3. Sour
  4. Pungent
  5. Astringent
  6. Salty

My two basic flavors

  1. Really great
  2. Really bad

Car Accident

On Tuesday we were coming up to a light when a guy in a truck pulled out into our lane and side swiped our rental car. I was a bit shaken up but I had Diane call the police so we could get a report made out. I'm just grateful that it wasn't my fault...and grateful it wasn't serious.

It took two hours out of our afternoon taking care of this mess, but we got ourselves another car, this one a bit better because it has 4-doors instead of 2.

I'm a bit leary about people coming up along side of me now.

What are the benefits of Dietary Fiber?

Here are some benefits to having fiber in our diets:
  • Vital for digestive processes
  • Helps remove toxins
  • Helps reduce cancer of the colon
  • Helps reduce heart disease
  • Helps reduce (or eliminate) diabetes
  • Helps reduce obesity

And here's something interesting - Fiber has -0- calories a gram. In fact they seem to have a negative effect on accumulated calories. Brenda Watson explains this in her book.
